Creating sustainable livelihoods, supporting Ushirika wa Neema Orphanage, and sharing African heritage with the world.
The Problem
The Ushirika wa Neema Orphanage relies heavily on external donations to provide care for children, but sustainable, local solutions are needed. Although the orphanage is in a rural area, they are in the Mount Kilimanjaro region which is close to tourism hotspots.
Our Solution
Over the course of nine months, we collaborated with the leaders of Ushirika we Neema to develop a business plan targeting the tourism sector of the Kilimanjaro region. The Made In Moshi retail shop is the first of its kind, offering custom-made clothing in local “kitenge” styles, paired with a shopping experience designed to appeal to tourists. Through Made in Moshi, we train local artisans in the art of Kitenge clothing production and offer entrepreneurial skills to help them market their work. This creates job opportunities and generates income to support both the artisans and the orphanage.
Impact
Phase one is complete, including a full renovation of the property and a soft opening to the local community. Phase 2 has been funded, and we will soon begin adding more custom made inventory, signage, Wi-Fi, and a beautiful courtyard. Additionally, we will have a café and coffee shop on the premises. What began as a simple retail store concept has evolved under the vision of the leader at Ushirika wa Neema Orphanage, Sister Lilian. She has incorporated rental space for other tailors and a large area that can serve as a vocational training center in the future. This store will be a hub for cultural exchange, artistic expression and local empowerment. We are proud to partner with Ushirika wa Neema to bring hope to vulnerable children through this self sustainable initiative.
